Deletion: a record withdrawn from a label's catalogue either at the artist's request or following a decline in sales, making the record no longer profitable.

The record would then be taken out of print.

Cut-outs: Following a title's deletion, remaining stock would be defaced with a cut-out through the sleeve. Cut-out records formed a grey market outside major distribution channels.

In 1993 MCA Records became the subject of a United States federal investigation of its cut-out sales practices after a deal allegedly involving organised crime.
